Fly Fishing Made Easy

Topics include: Fly casting - what makes it work; choosing the right system - making sure all the components are properly matched and balanced. The typical system includes: rod, reel, backing line, leader and tippet. Learn to cast with the basic strokes (back, forward and roll casts). Common casting problems - how to help cure and prevent them. Hands-on fly fishing at our private pond will be available.

"Tippy Canoe": May

  • Instructor: Southern Maine Guide Service

Hands-on experience will equip you with canoeing skills, and help you develop safety awareness. Build your self-esteem while increasing your ability to understand the rivers so that you can enjoy the true sport of canoeing. Topics include: safety, rescue and survival, paddle skills such as onside/offside spins, duffek, eddy turns, peel outs, ferrying, backpaddling, high/low brace and much more. You will have the option of canoeing a small section of fast water on the Saco River on Saturday.

Introduction to Basic & White Water Kayaking

We start on our Private Pond. You practice self rescue, wet exits, and emphasize the development of sound paddling techniques (the key to successful white water boating). Then to the Saco River; moving water skills, bracing, eddy turns, peel outs, ferries and reading and understanding water currents.

Our Kayaking School has three classifications:

I. Beginner: Brand new to the sport, has never been in an enclosed boat in moving water or had any instructions.

  • Saturday Time: 9am to 4pm
  • Ages: 14 & up
  • Fee: $60 (lunch and equipment included)

II. Advanced Beginner: Has prior instructions, paddled low class II moving water, and has attempted to roll. Understands and can perform eddy turn, peel out, ferrying and basic bracing techniques, but still inconsistent in performing these skills

  • Offered: 7/13/08
  • Saturday Time: 9am to 4pm
  • Ages: 14 & up
  • Fee: $60 (lunch and equipment included)

III. Intermediate: Can comfortably run class II and low class III water. Generally more agressive, has performed a roll in flat water and attempted one in moving water. Still needs work on sound paddling techniques.

The Maine Outdoors Survival Course: Sept.

Learn survival techniques that will prevent you from becoming lost, or which will enable you to survive should you become lost or injured while in the Maine woods. Topics include: map and compass orientation; knot tying; safety; camping skills; effects on the environment; fire building; shelters; dealing with heat exhaustion or frostbite.

Fall Foliage Canoe Trip: Sept. & Oct.

Join us on the Saco River for a delightful day of instruction, relaxation and inspiration. An experience for all levels, from novice to advanced. Meet at St. Saviour Tree Farm, Parsonsfield at 8:00 am. Bring sunglasses, water, foul weather gear - dress in layers. Lunch will be provided, cooked riverside.

This fall foliage river trip is very popular and fills up early (space is limited to 24 on each trip). when signing up please have alternate dates: First choice__________ Second Choice__________

Looking forward to that "trophy buck" this fall? This course will help to insure that you get the big one! We'll discuss scouting, locations tactics, hunting the rut, learning how and when to rattle and call your buck, as well as how and when to use deer scents.

Maine Outdoors and Cross Country Snowshoe Clinic

Come enjoy the solitude and beauty of a Maine winter! Learn survival skills, shelter & fire building and map & compass skills. The different styles, shapes, and proper maintenance of snowshoes will also be covered. A cross country snowshoe hike will test your map & compass skills by snowshoeing into a remote wilderness wildlife wintering area.

Winter Skills Weekend

Cross Country Snowshoe, Hiking, Backpacking & Camping Clinic

Join the excitement of this overnight, information packed course! Learn a variety of survival skills and have fun in the outdoors. Topics include: trip planning, type of camping, food & menu planning, equipment, backpacks, shelters, sleeping & cooking gear, wilderness first aid, and map & compass skills. The different styles, shapes and proper maintenance of snowshoes will also be covered. A cross-country snowshoe hike, open fire cookout, shelter & fire building are included. We will snowshoe into a deer-wintering area as well as visit an active beaver lodge.

Swiftwater Canoeing Clinic
June 2, 2007
Limington Rapids on the Saco River, Limington, ME

If you have canoed on flatwater and want to increase your paddling skills, this course is for you. In the morning we will work on strokes and rescue techniques. In the afternoon we will practice ferrying, peelouts/eddy turns, route finding and self-rescue in Class 1 water on the Saco River. Class 1 is an excellent level to learn on because it offers swifwater with few riffles and without major obstructions. Bunkhouse lodging for Friday, June 1 and breakfast Saturday, June 2 is available for an additional cost of $35.00.

Whitewater Kayaking Workshop
July 21-22, 2007
Parsonsfield, ME

If you've always wanted to learn kayaking skills in moving water but have felt intimidated because of your confident level or lack of experience then this workshop is for you.
The workshop begins on a Private Pond. The group will practice self-rescue, wet exits, and develop sound paddling techniques (the key to successful white water boating). Then the class will head to the Saco River, where you will learn moving water skills, bracing, eddy turns, peel outs, ferries and reading and understanding water currents. Lodging is available Friday night (July 20) for $35, which will include breakfast Saturday morning before the workshop.
